I get a lot of ask from people to help out with their interview prepping. And whenever I talk to people, I always start with the same method. And one of the things that was surprising for me is that how many people were not familiar with this message? I have learned about this framework when I was in my mba, and I thought it was a brilliant method to ate those tough interview questions.
Today I think i'm just gonna go over what start with it is, why do you have to use it? And when do you have to use it? And also my personal tips for a thing of interview questions. Let's start with. One is star method. Star or star is an acronym for situation, task, action, and result. It is a framework to answer those tough interview questions in a very structured way. So let's go over each one of these. Let's start with situation. Sir, a bit of the background context of the situation that you were facing, try to make it concise as possible and use easy understand terms if you think interviewer not might be familiar with the industry that you are in. And I would really emphasize on the being concise parts, because sometimes people really try to understand the whole context, and then they really go over time. I don't really want you to do that. So try to be concise as possible in the situation part.
Next one is tea tasks. This is where you describe the responsibility that you were given for a specific project or a process or whatever. This can be replaced by ac which is basically challenge. You can make the score with the star. However, if you think it will make sense to kind of share the challenge versus the task that you were given, I think it also makes sense. So she working anonymously and you face a challenge. How do you solve that? I think that would be the case for these c use cases. And then the most important part is probably gonna be a action is such that you have taken to make sure that your project is going forward. And then what what are the answers that you have taken to solve that specific challenge problem?
So in this step, I would emphasize that you first try to be concise, but also explaining the actual step steps that you have taken. I always try to use the kind of 123 like a bullet point approach, because I feel like that's always easier for the interviewer to collect data versus kind of rambling try to take step by step approach, by saying one.
This is what I did. Two. This is what I did through. This is what I did. I think that's gonna help you to be more concise and be a little bit more structured than just using other terms. Then the last one is results, or are. This one is the part where you would share the result of the whole project or the actions that you have taken. And it's basically the sharing. What was the outcome of your accents for the challenge that you were facing? And the best way to conclude this part is by providing valid leader. This valid data usually is tied to a cost, saving, time saving, or revenue growth, or any sort of those kind of data matrix that you can share with. I think it's better if you can share exact percentage or numbers, because that actually gives much more flavor to the story that we're telling.
And as I mentioned at the beginning start framework, one thing is probably gonna be scar, which is ac versus p and you make it a situation, challenge, action results kind of emphasizing the challenge and the actions that you have taken.
The other one that I really like is star l or star l kind of adding that l at the end, which basically means learn. So doing this whole present, what have you learned? And how are you improving yourself to make sure that things or does not happen? And then you have things undergo control. When these kind of situations pop up to you again, the times that I think the start of it makes the most sense are gonna be the failure story, because it asks you to give an example or story that you fail and learn something out of it.
So let's move into the y part now. So at this point, you're probably gonna be in like, wondering like, so, why do I have to use this method? I can tell my story pretty structured way and all that. But you have to understand that most of the interview setting, interviewers are actually collecting data. When I say collecting data, they're writing down stuff on their note and try to evaluate you in ways possible. And when it comes to interviewers for china value with you, it's best to kind of go with the structure or framework that the interviewers are familiar with. That's gonna be the star method, because a lot of time, when I interview people, a lot of times when I see feedback from people, they always have star under no pattern, kind of have everything under each multiple sections.
I think it's extremely important that you use this method when it comes to your interviews, because because not only it's a way to really make your soil structured and sound concise, but it's also a way to help your enemy were to collect value data in a very short way.
I would always try to emphasize to use the star method versus any other techniques that you have or is not using any methods at all when it comes to interview. When should people actually use the star method? So I would say that most of the times in a situation or behavioral question, in an interview, I would always you start with it. So questions that you potentially would get in those behavioral question would be tell me about a time when you have to go and be above and beyond for your customers, or give me an example of when you worked on a type deadline and still have to do the results, or describe a time when you disagree with your manager, what did you do? What was the outcome and stuff like this? Outside of interview? However, I think this is a great framework to use when explain meaning something, situation or sharing anecdotes with people when you need a little bit more structure to it. You can use this when you're sharing something with your manager or leadership, because I feel like this will give so much structure, too, sorry that you're trying to tell.
Yeah, so last one is my personal tips when it comes to star stories or behavior questions. Number one is, I think I mentioned at the beginning, but do not spend too much time in situation and task. Feel like bulk of your time when it comes to these behavioral or the situation interviews, has to be in action and result. Mostly in action, actually. Because situation and task usually are pretty similar, you can just explain it to the people that you are interview on. What I feel like the ones that really matters is gonna be the action part, because usually people are trying to evaluate you based on what you've done to mitigate or resolve the problem.
First is knowing what the problem is. So I would try to make it concise as possible in terms of situation and tasks. Number two is I always try to use actual means when it comes to telling stories or telling stories or behavior against behavior questions because I feel like that gives a little bit more livelihood to the story.
Obviously, these interviews are, if you think about it, we're just telling a story to someone. When it comes to sort telling it's always better to have a little more character, a little more in a flavor for it. I would suggest you use some actual names and try to make things slightly as possible. Number three is trying to emphasize while this project was important, like, sometimes, even if it was the most important project that has super huge impact to the business, people can be telling the story in a very important way.
In that tone can actually impact how the enemy were, is understanding or taking it by themselves. So I will try to make the story as interesting as possible. How to do that is to basically emphasize why this project was important, or why the challenge was such a big deal to your business and how this handling or resolving thing was able to make things better for the business. For is data. And like I always try to emphasize on the data, it's because when it comes to sharing your story, like no one to hear about, we had a great impact to the business and this like increase our revenue exponentially like that's a great choice. But like, if it's gonna be a better sweep at all, ar revenue was able to grow x percent or y percent or x million dollars or something.
First, so try to use some data when it comes to looking into what are the results or even taking action diving deep into the data and all those kind of stuff. So try to use data when it comes to sharing their stories. And then the last one is, instead of using star, try to use star l I feel like the learn pizza and really makes a difference because it gives you, because it tells the interviewer that you actually are willing to learn and be a better person professionally and personally.
